  • About the experience...

Leave the world behind and re-connect with nature in this natural wonderland of glacier-carved gorges, snow-capped mountains, ancient cedar groves and sparkling rivers that teem with salmon.

The Kermode or ‘spirit’ bear is a subspecies of the black bear of which roughly one in 10 are pure white. Other species that inhabit the forest include grizzly bears, wolves, cougars, and eagles.

Our waterfront lodge is a welcoming and comfortable place to lay your head at night after a day full of exploration and adventure. Architecturally, the exterior of the lodge pays homage to the traditional long houses built for thousands of years by West Coast First Nations. Inside, the atmosphere is modern and relaxing.

Gaze out towards the grey blue waters of the Pacific Ocean and watch for passing Orcas, White-Sided Dolphins and Sea Lions. Listen to the silence as you revel in the natural wonders of the pristine and raw landscapes that surrounds you in this unique culturally authentic lodge.

  • About the lodge...

Our lodge is run mostly on solar power, food waste is composted, and all non-recyclable trash is flown to Churchill to be disposed of properly.  With the emphasis on leaving a light footprint, guests walk with the wildlife on most outings instead of using enclosed tundra buggies.

Most of your time will be spent around our lodge near the Seal River Estuary, located 60km north of Churchill, Manitoba.  The fenced-in compound, viewing platforms and tower lend themselves to unique photography opportunities as wildlife approach to check out the sights, sounds and smells of the lodge.

Daily excursions are lead by resident naturalist guides, who know the area like the back of their hand.

Grizzly Bear Photo Safari
Canada, Chilkotin, Grizzly bear

Consider our 8 day small group Grizzly Bear Photographic Safari, departing from Vancouver BC in the Fall.
Details >>

A very special time of year in the Chilkotin Mountains is during “Indian summer”. It is an explosion of autumn colors, an abundance of wildlife, and an orchestra of sounds.

With the changing seasons the Sockeye & Chinook salmon return in vast numbers, spawning in the rivers and lakes.

There is no more pure symbol of the Canadian wilderness than the grizzly bear, and to experience it in its natural habitat is an awe-inspiring experience.

Interview with our guide >>

  • About the habitat...

With the returning of the salmon the Grizzly Bear, Black Bear, Bald Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Herons, Ducks, Ospreys, and other wildlife migrate to the river and lake to feast on the salmon.

It is very common to view a Grizzly with a salmon in its mouth, or even better when it explodes into action as the bear chases a salmon across the shoreline, sending thousands of sparkling water drops everywhere.

This is a wonderful time to visit BC's Cariboo region!
