As enthusiasts for nature, wildlife and in particular birds, the prospect of a self-organized African safari was daunting — until we decided to consult an expert, Christine Boecker, and leave the details to her. In our Discovery Call and later email exchanges, Christine listened and made suggestions based on her intimate knowledge of Africa, and tailored a three-week journey that proved to be the travel highlight of a lifetime.
We began the exploration on the Cape Peninsula, in wetlands and botanical gardens in Cape Town, and the Overberg east of the city, with a guide whose knowledge of local birds as well as love of all things botanical, geological and historical set the tone for this superb introduction to Africa.
And then… three action-packed days of game drives at in Sabi Sand, with up-close sightings all of the big five, including a beautiful leopard family. On to Victoria Falls (impressive, even in pre-rain low-flow), with close encounters with elephants and a sunset cruise on the Zambezi.
Finally, we experienced the highlights of Botswana, with game drives and small-boat cruises led by knowledgeable and personable guides, who showed us, as no book or documentary program could ever do, just how vast, wild and rich with life this part of the world is.
What let us enjoy these destinations was the well-oiled system Christine and her on-site travel partners organized between venues. At least a dozen road transfers to and from airports, hotels, and borders, as well as four flights by bush plane or helicopter in Botswana, all ran like clockwork. No anxieties about connections whatsoever.
Add to this the high quality of the hotel in Cape Town, the equally high quality of the safari lodges, the standard of cuisine everywhere, and the enthusiastic singing and dancing of the staff in Botswana, and the result is a collection of wonderful memories. We highly recommend Christine at TravelBoecker Adventures to plan and deliver a great African experience.
