About Responsible & Sustainable Eco-Tourism

What is Ecotourism?

TIES (the International Ecotourism Society) defines Ecotourism as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people”.

We seek out travel suppliers that follow these TIES guidelines:

  • Minimize impact by minimizing water and atmospheric pollution
  • Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect
  • Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts
  • Provide direct financial benefits for conservation
  • Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people
  • Raise sensitivity to host countries’ political, environmental, and social climate
  • Support international human rights and labor agreements
  • Where possible, use locally owned and run services and businesses

Luggage allowance for inter-camp flights in Africa

  • Maximum luggage weight is 20 kg = 44lbs (including all carry-on luggage if more than one bag and camera equipment)
  • Soft (all sides) luggage / duffel bags* – with no rigid sides or wheels. No hard suitcases or bags with wheels can be transported as they physically cannot fit into the aircraft.
*Check out the Black Hole Duffel, weighing less than 3 lbs.
  • The maximum dimensions of the soft bags which can be accommodated are as follows:
    10 inches wide (25cm)   X      12 inches high (30cm)    X     24 inches long (62cm)
Please keep in mind that the baggage compartments on the light aircraft are only 10 inches high, so the pilots must have the ability to manipulate the bag into the compartment.

These luggage restrictions appear minimal however please bear in mind the following:

  • Most safari camps / lodges and hotels provide basic toiletry amenities.
  • Laundry can be done on a daily basis (some camps provide this service free of charge, and some do charge a nominal fee)
  • Mainly casual clothing is required.

If you need to bring luggage in excess of your allowance, you may have the option of buying an extra seat which will allow an additional 154 lbs (soft bag only). The additional cost of this varies depending on your flight schedule so please contact me  for further details . We cannot guarantee that the excess luggage will be on the same aircraft.
