AMAZON RIVER SAFARIS

Journey into the Heart of our Planet

The Amazon Rainforest

The wild pulse of the jungle… feel it in the morning shroud of fog that blankets the Amazon, hear it in the noisy bird calls at dusk, see it in the tangles and creaks of its cathedral canopy of green as you enter the rain forest.

Join a long tradition of explorers on this great river, beginning with Spaniard Vicente Yanez Pinzon, who became the first European to sail into the Amazon in 1500 and Francisco de Orellana, who travelled its length in 1542.

You don’t have to rough it when exploring this untamed ecosystem from the comfort of your Amazon River Cruise or Eco Jungle Lodge.

The less-travelled part of the legendary Amazon is teeming with wild flora and fauna, from toucans, tarantulas and sloths to piranhas, caimans and pink dolphins, as well as many bird species and a fascinating human population. The further you venture into the jungle, the more wildlife you will see.

  • About the Amazon River

The Amazon River is situated on the Equator and drains the entire northern half of South America. This mighty river is ± 6400 kms long and occupies 7 million km². Its tributaries reach across seven countries, including Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru and Venezuela, feeding the largest tropical rainforest in the world.

The surrounding Amazon Jungle is sparsely populated and includes vast areas that are virtually inaccessible. One could spend a lifetime exploring its immense interior. Cruising the Amazon at any time of the year promises rich rewards with breathtaking opportunities to view and photograph magnificent plant and animal life unlike anywhere else on earth.

  • When and how to travel | FAQs

If seeing the glorious Amazon rainforest and getting up close to many birds and mammals at slightly cooler temperatures sounds most attractive, then the high water (rainy) season between December and May might be your best choice.

If jungle hikes and spotting exotic migratory birds, seeing capuchin monkeys, kinkajou, and other mammals and going on great fishing expeditions is your preference, you might be happier choosing the warmer, low water season that lasts from June until November.

Choose to explore the rich biodiversity of the Amazon’s many tributaries from an eco-jungle lodge or aboard a small ship river cruise and experience various fascinating guided excursions – kayak in flooded forests, trek through the Jungle, zip-line across the Canopy, swim with Piranhas – the options are endless.
