Barging and Biking through Holland
Windmills, Tulips, Cheese…
Enjoy the waterways of the Netherlands by river boat on our guided barge cruises, perfect for even the novice cyclist. With miles of quiet country roads, mostly very flat, you can enjoy seeing Holland while riding on dedicated bike trails or from the comfort of your movable hotel: our boat, which gently moves along the many canals of the Netherlands.
This unique holiday allows you the freedom to explore the countryside each day and sleep in comfort on board our barge at night, without having to pack each day. Cycling around 30 miles each day, you will enjoy seeing the lovely wind mills along the rural backwoods, and stopping in some picturesque towns for a snack or to pick up a lovely souvenir.
Our selection of Barge Cruises include
- Dutch Treat – 8 day guided Barge & Bike vacation
And ask us about these wonderful journeys:
- Around the Zuidersee – through Holland’s rich history and beautiful scenery
- Historic Holland & Flandern – explore 17th Holland and Flemish Middle Ages
- Rural Holland – typical Dutch landscape of polders, mills, harbours, and tulips
We’ve been there: Christine Boecker has first-hand advice to help plan your perfect Dutch vacation.
Dutch Treat – Southern Route
8-Day guided boat & bike tour from $1,850
Although we have several routes to choose from, we highly recommend the Dutch Treat through this most scenic region of Holland for your first bicycling adventure.
Starting in Amsterdam on most Saturdays between April and September, we sail and ride along the Vecht and Lek rivers, past historic towns and through farmland.
This is a wonderful to experience the Dutch way of life. Roam the centre of Haarlem, Leiden or 16th Century Delft, visit a museum (Frans Hals, Rembrandt and Van Gogh), shop, or relax in an outdoor café. Visit the beach and the dunes near The Hague by bike, just like the locals do and sail through the world’s largest seaport, Rotterdam. Discover the UNESCO site at Kinderdjik – eighteen mills driven by the wind and built around 1750. The height of the tulip season is April and May, where you can see fields of multi-coloured flowers in bloom!
More about a typical day on board…
This is a fairly easy tour, mostly level, paved ground with a few hills on the route. You will cycle about 4-5 hours a day, depending on your pace and fitness level. If you are already cycling or are planning to increase your exercise regime to include cycling, you should not encounter any difficulty.
In preparation plan to cycle at least three to four times a week starting at least a month prior to your departure, with two of the sessions for about 2-3 hours. The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy your cycling trip, eliminating saddle soreness.
Of course it is possible to take a day off, watching the scenery from the comfort of your barge.

TOUR DATES: Saturdays from April to September
TOUR COST: from $1,850 on Standard ship category or $1,995 ComfortPlus per person sharing a cabin
